Adolescent Family-Based Alcohol Prevention |

| Description: |
This study examines the effectiveness of
two theory-based, universal family prevention programs that have shown
efficacy for reducing adolescent alcohol and other drug use when
implemented with families randomly assigned to: 1) a family "choice"
condition, and 2) a traditional random control trail condition. The two
conditions (choice vs. assigned) is compared for differences in: (a)
adolescent outcomes related to alcohol use and related behaviors; (b)
family characteristics for those who participate; (c) family
recruitment, retention and completion rates; (d) costs for program
implementation. The sample is drawn from families (N=725) with a child
age 11 or 12 currently enrolled in Kaiser Permanente Health Care Plan,
in one of four medical centers in Northern California. PRI is conducting
baseline face-to-face interviews at the four Kaiser Permanente
facilities. |

City. Phase I consisted of moderated Small Group sessions in which
participants discussed and deliberated on specific topics which
culminated in Phase II, a Town Hall Meeting in which all participants
could vote and prioritize on the topics and priorities providing the
Mayor's Office with valuable feedback regarding the needs and priorities
of San Francisco residents. |

confidence in the California Courts. The study included oversamples of
African American and Asian American respondents, and interviews were
conducted in English, Spanish, Cantonese, and Mandarin. PRI calculated
sampling weights, performed comprehensive analysis (including
adjustments for design effects), and participated in presentations and
reporting for California's Judicial Branch of government. |

PRI conducted focus groups, a pilot survey (n = 619), and a statewide survey (n
= 3,808) to provide current information about the oil disposal behavior, media
use, attitudes, and message and incentive receptivity of Californians who change
their own motor oil (do-it-yourselfers—DIYers); address the problem of response
bias in past used oil surveys in order to obtain more accurate estimates of the
used-oil recycling behavior of DIYers; and improve the methodology for
estimating used-oil-recycling behavior. The project consisted of a review of
recent research on survey methodology and environmental issues and recycling;
focus groups of DIYers not previously studied; design and execution of pilot
studies to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of alternative survey methods
to produce more accurate reports of used-oil recycling behavior in diverse
populations; a statewide survey, incorporating the results of the pilot study, to
estimate DIY and improper disposal statewide; and an extended analysis
integrating census and recycling collections data with the survey results. |

REACHing Vietnamese Women: A Community Model for Promoting Cancer Screening |

This survey, administered by telephone, was designed to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer among
750 Vietnamese women residing in Santa Clara County, California and a
comparison group of 750 Vietnamese women in Harris County, Texas
(n=1500). The study included a 2-year follow-up telephone survey
(n=1566) in both counties to assess the effectiveness of a health
promotion intervention. This project, was developed by VCHPP in
partnership with several San Francisco Bay Area health care providers
and community service agencies. |

| Description: |
PRI conducted follow-up telephone interviews with 716 smallpox vaccine recipients in 2002 for a
national study sponsored by the Centers of Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) to investigate the prevalence and severity
of adverse events following the receipt of smallpox vaccinia vaccine among a
sample of participants identified by CDC as potential "first respondents" to
smallpox bioterrorism incident. Although the study was terminated because of the vaccine's
adverse effects, PRI developed and implemented successful systems for
managing information exchange with Kaiser Permanente under demanding
constraints for the timing of interviews, interview protocols, data
integrity, and respondent confidentiality. |

PRI administered the San Jose site of the nationwide
Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring System funded by National Opinion
Research Center. This study involved interviewing arrestees in a
jail setting with a highly specified, rigorous protocol that included the collection of urine specimens.
Interviewing was performed for two weeks per calendar quarter throughout
the study period. |

1173 follow-up interviews for this randomized controlled trail with a
cohort of ethnically diverse women in Alameda County (African American,
Caucasian, Chinese, Filipina, and Latina), achieving a response rate of
83%. |

educational strategies. |
