Integrated Provider Satisfaction Pilot Study

Description:  Develop and test an appropriate patient satisfaction survey instrument specific to the PACE model. PRI conducted two focus groups, one in Cantonese in San Francisco and one in Spanish in Los Angeles. The client will use the findings from these two groups to develop a pilot survey instrument. PRI administered this survey in a series of 20 cognitive interviews. Half was conducted in Spanish (Los Angeles), and half in Cantonese (San Francisco). Half of the interviews were conducted by telephone, and the other half in person. Participants are care recipients aged 80 years or older who are living independently.
Understanding Out-migration of African American Families in San Francisco

Description:  Conducted in collaboration with the College of Ethnic Studies, SF State on behalf of the Office of Community Development of the Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco. The goal of the study was to better understand the trends of out-migration of African American families from San Francisco in order to inform a task force convened by the Mayor to develop recommendations and policies to attract and keep African American families in San Francisco. Colon Cancer Screening: Overcoming the Barriers in Minority Communities

Description:  This project evaluates interventions designed to increase colon cancer screening in the Vietnamese and Latino communities at primary care clinics of the Valley Medical Center in San Jose, California. PRI is conducting a longitudinal telephone survey (n=1800) in English, Vietnamese and Spanish.
Colorectal Cancer Screening in Vietnamese: A Controlled Trial

Description:  The goal of this study is to increase colorectal cancer screening among 50 to 79 year old Vietnamese residents of Northern California through culturally appropriate interventions that educate Vietnamese Americans and health care providers on the importance of colorectal screening. The evaluation survey conducted by PRI consists of baseline (n= 750) and follow-up telephone calls conducted in Vietnamese and English.

Research Infrastructure in Minority Institutions (RIMI)

Description:  The RIMI program is part of SF State's effort to develop a critical mass of faculty investigators and biomedical research activity that will be self-sustaining beyond RIMI grant funding. The goals of the program are to increase biomedical research capacity at SFSU, and hire and support new underrepresented minority faculty to participate in the RIMI program. PRI conducts an annual evaluation of the program.
2007 San Francisco City Survey

Description:  Multi-year mixed-mode survey (phone, mail, internet) of San Francisco residents to gauge satisfaction with use of City-provided services and feelings of safety. Conducted in English, Spanish, and Chinese. PRI is conducting 800 telephone interviews and administers the web-based survey.

REACHing Vietnamese Women: A Community Model for Promoting Cervical and Breast Cancer Screening

Description:  This survey, administered by telephone, was designed to reduce the incidence of cervical and breast cancer among Vietnamese-American women residing in Santa Clara County, California and a comparison group of Vietnamese-American women in Harris County, Texas. PRI is conducting follow-up telephone survey in both counties to assess the effectiveness of a health promotion intervention. This project, was developed by VCHPP in partnership with 15 Santa Clara County health care providers and community service agencies.
BSS Enrollment Study 2007

Description:  The purpose of this study was to assess student opinions about the structure of Commencement ceremonies at SF State. PRI conducted an overview of Commencement practices at other Universities, as well as a student survey and focus groups with current students and recently graduated alumni.
California Workers' Compensation Surveys

Description:  This study includes two surveys regarding California Workers’ Compensation claims: 1) Provider Survey: medical providers who have treated workers filing Workers’ Compensation claims in the past 5 years and those who have provided such treatment in the past but no longer provide services; n = 1200; administered by mail, telephone, and internet. 2) Injured Workers Survey. conducted in English or in Spanish of workers who have filed claims within the past year; n=1000; administered by mail and telephone.
Adolescent Family-Based Alcohol Prevention

Description:  This study examines the effectiveness of two theory-based, universal family prevention programs that have shown efficacy for reducing adolescent alcohol and other drug use when implemented with families randomly assigned to: 1) a family "choice" condition, and 2) a traditional random control trail condition. The two conditions (choice vs. assigned) is compared for differences in: (a) adolescent outcomes related to alcohol use and related behaviors; (b) family characteristics for those who participate; (c) family recruitment, retention and completion rates; (d) costs for program implementation. The sample is drawn from families (N=725) with a child age 11 or 12 currently enrolled in Kaiser Permanente Health Care Plan, in one of four medical centers in Northern California. PRI is conducting baseline face-to-face interviews at the four Kaiser Permanente facilities.

SFPUC Wastewater Master Plan Public Participation Services

Description:  Multilingual baseline telephone survey (n=800) of San Francisco households to help the SFPUC involve and partner with diverse stakeholders to develop a mutually acceptable wastewater management plan. Analysis included cross tabulations and GIS spatial analysis of survey results.

Description:  PRI planned and implemented this two-phase Town Hall Meeting at SF State which was focused on budgetary priorities facing The City. Phase I consisted of moderated Small Group sessions in which participants discussed and deliberated on specific topics which culminated in Phase II, a Town Hall Meeting in which all participants could vote and prioritize on the topics and priorities providing the Mayor's Office with valuable feedback regarding the needs and priorities of San Francisco residents.

Public Trust and Confidence in the California Courts

Description:  Statewide telephone survey of California residents (n=2418) and practicing attorneys (n=527) concerning public trust and confidence in the California Courts. The study included oversamples of African American and Asian American respondents, and interviews were conducted in English, Spanish, Cantonese, and Mandarin. PRI calculated sampling weights, performed comprehensive analysis (including adjustments for design effects), and participated in presentations and reporting for California's Judicial Branch of government.

Getting Behind the Headlines: Families Leaving San Francisco

Description:  PRI produced a policy white paper includes demographic analysis (US Census) concerning the status of families with young children in San Francisco from 1990-2000, and includes additional analysis from two recent surveys of parents. Hunger in America Survey

Used Oil Recycling Survey, Focus Groups, and Extended Analysis

Description:  PRI conducted focus groups, a pilot survey (n = 619), and a statewide survey (n = 3,808) to provide current information about the oil disposal behavior, media use, attitudes, and message and incentive receptivity of Californians who change their own motor oil (do-it-yourselfers—DIYers); address the problem of response bias in past used oil surveys in order to obtain more accurate estimates of the used-oil recycling behavior of DIYers; and improve the methodology for estimating used-oil-recycling behavior. The project consisted of a review of recent research on survey methodology and environmental issues and recycling; focus groups of DIYers not previously studied; design and execution of pilot studies to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of alternative survey methods to produce more accurate reports of used-oil recycling behavior in diverse populations; a statewide survey, incorporating the results of the pilot study, to estimate DIY and improper disposal statewide; and an extended analysis integrating census and recycling collections data with the survey results.

REACHing Vietnamese Women: A Community Model for Promoting Cancer Screening

Description:  This survey, administered by telephone, was designed to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer among 750 Vietnamese women residing in Santa Clara County, California and a comparison group of 750 Vietnamese women in Harris County, Texas (n=1500). The study included a 2-year follow-up telephone survey (n=1566) in both counties to assess the effectiveness of a health promotion intervention. This project, was developed by VCHPP in partnership with several San Francisco Bay Area health care providers and community service agencies.
Safety Evaluation of Vaccinia Vaccine

Description:  PRI conducted follow-up telephone interviews with 716 smallpox vaccine recipients in 2002 for a national study sponsored by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to investigate the prevalence and severity of adverse events following the receipt of smallpox vaccinia vaccine among a sample of participants identified by CDC as potential "first respondents" to smallpox bioterrorism incident. Although the study was terminated because of the vaccine's adverse effects, PRI developed and implemented successful systems for managing information exchange with Kaiser Permanente under demanding constraints for the timing of interviews, interview protocols, data integrity, and respondent confidentiality.
Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring (ADAM)

Description:  PRI administered the San Jose site of the nationwide Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring System funded by National Opinion Research Center. This study involved interviewing  arrestees in a jail setting with a highly specified, rigorous protocol that included the collection of urine specimens. Interviewing was performed for two weeks per calendar quarter throughout the study period.

Access and Early Cancer Detection for the Underserved

Description:  Study to improve initial breast and cervical cancer screening and maintenance of interval screening under conditions of shifting access to medical care in a low-income, multiethnic sample of women in Alameda County. PRI conducted 1173 follow-up interviews for this randomized controlled trail with a cohort of ethnically diverse women in Alameda County (African American, Caucasian, Chinese, Filipina, and Latina), achieving a response rate of 83%.
Barriers to Colon Cancer Screening in Minority Populations

Description:  This study, administered by telephone, investigated knowledge of and attitude towards colon cancer screening in low-income minority populations of adult Caucasian, Hispanic, and Vietnamese men and women, age 50 to 79, residing in San Jose, California (n=777). The results were used to help identify barriers to colon cancer screening and develop intervention and educational strategies.
