Working with PRI

Research at PRI is initiated in a number of different ways, depending on the organizations involved and the method of funding. Because PRI and SF State are part of the California State University system, State and regional government agencies in California may initiate research directly through interagency agreements. SF State administrative offices and nonprofit institutions may also request the development of research directly, without a bidding process. PRI also responds to Requests for Proposals (RFP) from government and nonprofit agencies, often in collaboration with other research organizations. New research often involves original grant proposals with SF State faculty members and collaborating institutions.

Grants and contracts are administered by the SF State Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, and are thus governed by the policies and regulations of the State of California and the California State University. In some cases, research funding can be implemented through the San Francisco State University Foundation, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

Although different types of projects have different procedural variations, they all begin with a discussion of the work scope and budget. It is always a challenge to create a plan that achieves the best possible match between a research question, the purpose of the research, and the available resources. Because a successful outcome depends on accurate cost estimation, it is important to allow enough time for the process. In most cases, cost estimates will require 5-10 working days, depending on staff availability. Larger projects may take more time, as there may be many different scenarios to consider.

In order to begin the process, we have developed a request for cost estimation form that includes many of the questions that must be answered in the early stages of planning. We are happy to discuss new research ideas with or without the form, but those conversations will be more productive if we have the essential information beforehand. The form can be submitted automatically through our website. We will contact you as soon as possible about your project. For all enquiries about new projects, please contact:
